British drivers 'unaware of road tax band'

A large percentage of British drivers are unaware of which road tax band their car falls in to, according to the Environmental Transport Agency.

With changes to road tax rates forecasted in 2009, based on the level of emissions a car releases, over one million drivers may be forced to pay more than double the price they are currently paying for their road tax.

However 84 per cent of drivers are currently unprepared when it comes to dealing with these changes because they are unsure of what tax band their vehicle is currently a part of.

Andrew Davis, director at the Environmental Transport Association, said: "The new system aims to encourage drivers to choose the least polluting car, but millions of drivers will get a shock as tax bills land on doorsteps next April -the spiralling cost of motoring means people need to check now how much they will pay."

If a driver does suffer these car tax hikes then they are advised against trying to save money by not taking out a car insurance policy.

Instead MoneyExpert advises them to shop around in search of a cheaper car insurance quote.
