Brits unprepared for European driving
Two thirds of Britons that drive abroad end up involved in some kind of accident, new research has found.
Research from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), also found that tourists are three times more likely than local drivers to be involved in a road accident.
Possible reasons for this could be that 31 per cent of foreign drivers have driven on the wrong side of the road and more than one in ten have specifically driven the wrong way around a roundabout abroad.
The Association of British Insurers has stated that eight million Brits take to foreign roads each year and only 37 per cent of the study declared that they check the local driving laws of their destination, which will not help the driver's road safety.
Motoring expert and television presenter, Quentin Willson, said: "No matter how experienced a driver you are in the UK, it is important to expect the unexpected when driving abroad.
"It's bad enough that in most other countries they drive on the wrong side of the road, they've got some pretty strange laws too! For example, in Denmark you have to check under the car for children before starting the engine!"
When looking for European car insurance, motorists are focused primarily on cost, according to research from Fairinvestment.co.uk.
