Car insurance quotes set to increase

Financially strained car owners will not see their condition become any better as cheap car insurance quotes may be more difficult to come by, according to the latest release of the AA's quarterly British Insurance Premium Index.

Over the previous quarter, motorists have seen average car insurance quotes remain roughly the same, but the upward trend that was in motion before this period is set to resume.

The index shows that over the three months which ended in June, comprehensive car insurance quotes rose by over £20, taking the average to in excess of £700.

Young drivers, who already have to stump up the largest costs, saw their average quotes rise by as much as £45 as car insurance companies continue to see them as the most likely motorists to make a claim.

Their average quote now stands at £884.

Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, said: "Car insurance costs are spiralling.

"While the number of casualties on Britain's roads is falling, the cost of accidents is rising and young drivers are taking an increasing share of the toll. Insurers are also concerned about rising legal costs and personal injury claims and I expect the upward trend in premiums to continue."
