Comprehensive car insurance may not cover drivers fully

Motorists coming up to renewing their car insurance should have a close inspection of what a car insurance quote is actually covering them for.

Comprehensive car insurance is understood by most motorists to cover any potential damage to a car in an accident, however it has been uncovered that certain aspects of a car insurance policy that are generally taken for granted are creeping out of some policies.

The British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) has found that drivers that take out comprehensive cover with certain companies may not be covered for things such as courtesy cars or third party cover for driving other vehicles.

And because of the competition within the industry, car insurance companies are bumping up prices by making customers pay for the features as optional extras.

Biba's technical and corporate affairs executive Graeme Trudgill said: "All the advertising is about price. It's no longer focused on providing the right financial protection for the motorist."

However, it may be important for motorists to purchase the added extras, after a poll of 1,000 motorists by insurance.co.uk found that over half of the respondents had at some point claimed on their car insurance.
