Drivers should check car insurance with provider before travelling
As many motorists look to drive their vehicle overseas this summer for a short weekend break, they have been warned not to do so without having a suitable level of car insurance.
Research from car insurance company Sheilas' Wheels has found that almost half (49 per cent) of holidaymakers will ditch their aeroplane food for the cheaper alternative of travelling by car.
Also, although most drivers know the importance of having European car insurance for their trip, 15 per cent of motorists assume they are automatically covered with comprehensive insurance when driving abroad if that's what they have in the UK.
And only ten per cent would deem it suitable to check this with their insurer.
Jacky Brown at Sheilas Wheels' car insurance said: "When planning to take a car to Europe, it is crucial for motorists to call their insurer and tell them that they want to extend their level of cover for driving abroad."
Slightly worryingly, 33 per cent of the study thought that the driving rules and regulations were the same on European roads as they are in the UK.
