Drivers told of tiredness dangers
Drivers have been told of the excess risk of driving while tired and the impact it has on the brain.
The Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University has warned drivers not to drive when tired or rush if they feel the need to get some sleep.
Many fatal accidents have been caused by tired drivers and those that have escaped serious injury will still suffer on their car insurance when their premiums are increased following a claim.
The university website states: "Sleepiness affects the brain in subtle ways, for example, producing mild euphoria and impaired judgement of risk.
"This "buzz" of the small hours is why casinos open at night, as punters are more likely to feel lucky, and more likely to lose."
Drivers who may be feeling the early stages of sleepiness on the road are advised to pull into a service station for a strong caffeine drink and a short snooze, while passengers should also try to remain awake to keep the driver company.
