First digital motorway signs introduced
Motorway drivers will this week get their taste of the future of signage as the first digital signs are installed to warn motorists of hazards ahead.
The Highways Agency (HA) has revealed that the signals will be introduced on an 11-mile stretch of the M42 and will display recognisable pictures.
They aim to warn motorists of potential problems on the road ahead including snow, accidents, high winds, queues and skidding.
Traffic operations director at the HA Derek Turner said: "This is the first time we have used these latest generation signs with pictograms to get helpful and up-to-date information out to drivers and I am pleased that those in the West Midlands are the first to benefit."
It is hoped that the images will also be helpful to drivers from foreign countries who do not understand English language signs.
In all, 36 hazard signs will be introduced on the section of motorway - which is part of the Active Traffic Management scheme allowing drivers to enter the hard shoulder during busy periods.
