Motorists given European car insurance warning

Motorists expecting to drive their car across the continent this summer have been told by AA Insurance to carefully check their car insurance policies to make sure they have adequate European car insurance.

Ian Crowder, spokesperson for the firm, has warned drivers that "it's very easy to just assume that if your covered in the UK you are going to be covered elsewhere in Europe", but that's not always the case.

He said: "If you have an insurance policy in any EC country that policy will be valid at the minimum legal level in other countries that you might be visiting within the EC. If you have comprehensive insurance in the UK it will give you third party cover in other countries.

"I think a lot of people have been unwittingly misled into thinking that ...their comprehensive insurance will also be comprehensive in the countries that they visit – that's not so."

Motorists who fail to check their cover may find it difficult to get their vehicle dealt with when abroad or may have to foot extra large motoring bills.

Around 17 per cent of motorists are expected to take their cars abroad within the next 12 months, according to Sainsbury's Car Insurance.
