Motorists want speed cameras out
After the recent move by Swindon Borough Council to ditch their speed cameras, other motorists across the country are calling for similar changes, according to a new survey.
An online poll by Motorpoint has discovered that many drivers want their local authorities to follow suit and scrap speed cameras.
Of the 1,100 motorists questioned, 76 per cent of respondents stated they wanted their local politicians to think up alternate methods of getting people to reduce their speed rather than bringing in speed cameras.
David Shelton, managing director of Motorpoint: "While no one would argue that they don't have a place, as a country we need to be looking at other ways of educating drivers to slow down, rather than simply by punishing them with three points and a £60 fine."
A motorist who does get three points on their licence is likely to find it tougher to get cheap car insurance in the future due to car insurance providers deeming a driver with points as more of a risk.
Swindon council recently ditched their speed cameras after receiving none of the cash raised from them, despite having to pay £320,000 a year for their maintenance.
