New code of practice to thwart rogue garages

A new code of practice has been launched within the motor industry to provide motorists with reassurance that garages will offer a fair and honest service.

After complaints that garages are costing drivers almost £4 billion a year, the new code commits subscribing garages to provide honest services, open pricing, completed work as agreed, invoices which match quoted prices, competent staff and a swift complaint service.

Meanwhile, research by insurance.co.uk has found that half of British motorists believed they have been scammed at some point by a rogue mechanic.

The concerns among drivers include 52 per cent thinking they will be overcharged, 48 per cent believing the mechanic will do more work than necessary and 34 per cent believing the mechanic will exploit their lack of car knowledge.

Steve Grainger, head of insurance.co.uk, said: "Until the Code receives full OFT approval, consumers will need to remain vigilant and ensure they use reputable tradesmen - ideally recommended by a friend, trade body or quality approved network."

A way in which a motorist could save money from owning a car is to seek out cheap car insurance and according to the Association of British Insurers, shopping around for a cheap car insurance quote is the best way of doing this.
