Number of motorists without car insurance increases

Worryingly for the government, the number of motorists hitting the roads with vehicles that are unregistered, not taxed, have no motor insurance or are not roadworthy has increased in the last year.

The Transport Committee now wants the government to reinstate the targets that it dropped in March 2007, which will aim to lower the number of motorists on the road who are not fully licensed.

Also a committee of MPs has called on the government to re-examine its policy on road pricing plans in a bid to tackle congestion in the UK more effectively.

These are among the conclusions found in a Transport Committee report looking at the Department for Transport's annual report from 2007.

Commenting on the report, Transport Committee chair Louise Ellman, said: "The Department must be clear about identifying its main priorities and showing how progress can be measured."

New drivers that have no car insurance because they deem it too expensive have been given some tips on how to reduce their car insurance quotes.

Money Expert has told new drivers that cheaper car insurance quotes can be gained by completing a pass plus driving exam or through buying car insurance online.
