Old tyres could jeopardise cheap car insurance

Motorists who do not want to jeopardise their cheap car insurance premiums may be well advised to check the condition of tyres that are more than five years old, if new research is anything to go by.

According to a study by Kwik-Fit, this important auto part can start to deteriorate after this age, putting drivers at greater risk of being involved in an accident.

It warned some 16.7 million vehicles in the UK could be fitted with tyres that are potentially dangerous due to premature ageing.

The group also pointed out such problems can be hard to spot.

Customer services director David White explained: "Low mileage, older cars tend to be most at risk from premature ageing as their owners assume there's no problem if they can still see plenty of tread."

He stated anyone concerned about their tyres should get them checked over by a professional.
