Over 55s suffer European road problems
More than two thirds of Brits aged over 55 have suffered some sort of problem when driving abroad, according to recent research from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).
Problems that have struck British drivers on foreign roads include getting lost, driving on the wrong side of the road and 'motorway mugging'.
Some of these problems could lead to serious accidents which may increase the cost of future European car insurance for drivers who claim.
The research also determined that over 55s are the most likely holidaymakers to drive a car abroad and they are being urged by the FCO to increase their preparation before they leave home.
It has been found that over half of drivers leave home without their driving licence and two thirds fail to carry a breakdown policy.
One man who ran into trouble on foreign soil was David Andrews from Brighton who was mugged in Spain.
He said: "My car tyres were slit while I was filling up at a petrol station and when my car rolled to a stop a couple of miles later I was robbed while I was underneath the car replacing a tyre."
