Parents warned to sort out car insurance

As thousands of young adults prepare to swan off to university in the coming weeks, parents have been advised to make sure that if their child is taking the car on the trip, to make sure that car insurance is correctly sorted out.

Confused.com warns adults that if their child is insured on the vehicle they own as a named driver, but is to be the main driver by taking the car to university, then it is important to make amendments to their car insurance policies.

The company states that parents who fail to are committing fraud as they are illegally getting cheaper car insurance.

Confused.com adds that the child could be committing an act known as 'fronting', which the company quotes as being "a deliberate attempt to obtain insurance using false information, by hiding/changing the true user and risk information, in order to obtain a cheaper insurance premium".

To avoid committing this act and invalidating their policy, a parent is advised to contact their car insurance provider and amend their policy to reflect the true use of the vehicle.

Another way in which a driver could invalidate their policy is not telling their car insurance provider of any modifications that have been made to a vehicle.
