Parked car accidents affecting motor insurance
Some motorists are having to claim on their car insurance for an accident involving their vehicle when it is parked up, it has been revealed.
Accident Exchange has found that 700,000 motorists shunt, scrape or hit parked cars each year and blameless drivers are being forced to deal with the repair bill.
Analysis of over 100,000 accidents over a two year period found that some drivers retuned to their parked car to find it damaged while some were in a stationary vehicle when an incident happened.
It is believed that overcrowding on roads, a trend towards larger vehicles and more motorists failing to dedicate their full concentration to the hazards around them are all reasons for the figures.
Steve Evans, of Accident Exchange, told the Times: "The fear is that soon we will have parked car incident hotspots where nearby residents could even be priced out of insuring their vehicles."
One in ten of London residents are thought to be the most likely to be involved in a parked car incident and according to online car insurance company swiftcover.com, London is also the least safe place to park a car in terms of the risk of it being broken into or stolen.
