Parking costs could increase

If many motorists didn't already believe that the cost of staying on the road wasn't high enough, the costs of parking in a car park may also increase in the near future.

A suggestion by the government that motorists are getting away with parking too cheaply in town centre car parks has been welcomed by the Environmental Transport Association (ETA).

If the move does go ahead motorists may have to increase their search for cheaper car insurance in an attempt to reduce their road costs.

Government minister John Healey has been criticised this week for stating that local councils should increase parking costs as a way of reducing congestion.

And Andrew Davis, director at the ETA, believes it would be a positive move.

He said: "Local businesses often object to parking charges, but the car park that is constantly full because it is too cheap, is not bringing custom to local shops."

Motorists could also reduce their car costs by reversing their car into a space, as driving forwards when a car is initially started uses less fuel, according to the Institute of Advanced Motorists.
