Penalty points have substantial car insurance impact
Having penalty points on a driving licence can cost a motorist £370 more than it would cost a driver with a clean licence, it has been found.
Recent research from Confused.com has found that a driver who has picked up a speeding ticket or has driven through a red light, is liable to a 60 per cent hike in their future car insurance quotes.
Unsurprisingly, younger drivers suffer the biggest car insurance rises through accumulating penalty points, suffering rises of up to 92 per cent for six points or a £2,048 rise for nine points.
Interestingly a woman in her 50s could see an 81 per cent rise compared to only a 49 per cent rise for a man owning exactly the same vehicle.
Carlton Hood, chief executive officer of Confused.com, said: "While speeding is a tempting option for some, we would advise our customers to think carefully before making poor driving decisions.
"Saving two minutes on your journey time by skipping a red light or driving over the speed limit not only endangers yourself and others around you, but you are risking a large fine, a tarnished licence and potentially higher insurance premiums."
