Speeding motorists given speed awareness option

Motorists that have been caught speeding are being given the opportunity to attend a speed awareness course to help them change their driving habits, reports the Wirral Globe.

Drivers who receive a speeding ticket do not only get a £60 fine and three points on their licence, they also may see a hike in their car insurance as insurers see them as more of a risk on the road.

The courses, which are being offered by certain police forces, will allow a selected criteria of drivers to assess their skills and try to convince them to follow speed limits and help them avoiding concentration lapses.

Merseyside Police is one of the few police forces offering the course and its chief inspector Christopher Markey told the newspaper: "Motorists attending the course will learn about hazard awareness, speeding consequences and tips on how to keep themselves and others safe.

"If we can achieve our objectives by educating people instead of prosecuting them then that is what we will do."

And drivers in Lancashire may be getting their fair share of speeding tickets after motorists and residents in Walton-le-Dale complained of a mobile speed camera that was half hidden behind a wall, reported the Lancashire Evening Post.
