Taking away traffic lights 'could make roads safer'

Removing traffic lights from roads could help to make them safer, it has been stated.

According to the campaign group FiT Roads, traffic lights can make roads unsafe because drivers tend to take their eyes off of the road when approaching them and speed through them to avoid getting held on red.

Thus, making a change to the Highway Code and taking traffic lights off the roads could help make roads safer and possibly enable drivers to get cheaper car insurance quotes because they will supposedly be less likely to have an accident.

Writing on the popular blog fitroads.com, Martin Cassini said: "Traffic lights flout basic safety principles by taking our eyes off the road.

"They encourage us to speed as we try to avoid another red. They defy common-sense by making us stop when it's safe to go. They conjure congestion by making us queue consecutively instead of allowing us to filter simultaneously."

He added that traffic lights also increase the emissions a car gives out because of their stop-start cycle.

Motorists looking to save money on the road have been told by the car advice company Clean Green Cars to approach traffic lights at an economical speed and limit heavy breaking, to have greater fuel efficiency.
