Uninsured drivers 'costing others dear'

Concerns have been raised after new figures show that uninsured drivers are costing other motorists thousands of pounds.

An article published in the Derby Telegraph says that those driving without adequate car insurance are costing other drivers in the Derbyshire region up to £30 a year.

The Motor Insurance Bureau pays out compensation to victims of collision with uninsured drivers – with the extra cash becoming available through adding money to the premiums of law-abiding motorists.

Malcolm Tarling, spokesman for the Association of British Insurers, told the newspaper: "Uninsured driving is a menace and makes Derbyshire's roads more dangerous."

Figures show that in 2006, almost 20,000 car accidents involving drivers without car insurance took place in the county.

Meanwhile, collisions may become a thing of the past now that BMW claims to have invented a car you cannot crash.

The manufacturer says its Active Cruise Control system in its 5 and 6 Series cars emits a radar which warns the car to break automatically if it senses and obstacle in its path. ADNFCR-1379-ID-18471348-ADNFCR
