Women increasingly involved in car vandalism

Motorists looking to keep down the costs of their car insurance may have the most to fear from women, according to recent research.

Research from the UK Vandalism Report by Direct Line Car Insurance, has found that nearly 1.5 million women have admitted to deliberately damaging a vehicle, with the damage including breaking off car parts, smashing windows, scratching paintwork and denting the bodywork by "car surfing".

Damage of this nature may cause a driver to claim on their car insurance to repair the damage and claiming will often cause a motorist to suffer from future increases in car insurance quotes.

The majority of the women polled (62 per cent) stated that they were spur of the moment acts, with 23 per cent stating they committed the acts because of boredom.

Jennifer Culley, spokesperson for Direct Line Car Insurance, said: "The number of motorists who have been victims of car vandalism has risen to nearly a third (30 per cent) of all car owners nationwide, up from one-in-ten (11 per cent) two years ago.

"The growing trend of 'girl gang' culture does seem to be responsible for a significant percentage of car vandalism crimes."
