Young males most common uninsured drivers

Many of the motorists driving around with no car insurance or licence tend to be young males from urban areas, according to research.

The report has been published in the latest edition of Advanced Driving, the magazine for members of the Institute for Advanced Motorists (IAM).

Neil Greig, IAM Motoring Trust director, stated in the magazine that six in ten of the motorists convicted for failing to even have cheap car insurance are aged under 25.

He added: "These drivers have a high risk of crashing and there is a perception among their peers that they can 'get away with it'. Young people must be convinced that the only way to drive is fully licensed and insured."

A further finding of the study revealed that unlicensed drivers are on the road for a worrying 3.7 million hours every month.

To try and encourage younger drivers to improve their road safety the IAM has drawn up a ten point plan, including identifying those who are reckless and vying for cheaper car insurance for those deemed to be more low risk.

Many young drivers are finding it tough to get cheap car insurance because they are driving vehicles with larger engine sizes, according to figures from Gocompare.com.
